Changes to emergency department entrance in Amstelveenseweg postponed

In the weekend of 4 November, we were planning to make a series of adjustments in order to improve traffic safety around the emergency department at Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc. However, the forecast of rain means that there is too great a risk of the works becoming delayed and causing traffic disruption. We have therefore decided to postpone the work. We are currently in talks with the contractor in an effort to identify a more suitable time. This is not likely to be for several months: after the upcoming winter season, which is never a good time for road-resurfacing work because of the weather. In the weeks ahead, we will be making some minor changes that are less weather-dependent but also improve traffic safety, such as applying signposting and road markings.

Preventing traffic disruption

The planned works primarily involved making changes to the entrance and the carriageway that connects to it. This will require a lot of fresh asphalt. However, road-surfacing work is difficult during rainfall: the asphalt cools down too quickly, which affects its quality. The only option is therefore to postpone. Otherwise, it would mean that Amstelveenseweg would still be dug up after the weekend just as it starts to become congested again when the schools reopen after the holiday. We simply cannot accept that.
