Goede Doelen Loterijen

A vacant and neglected building became the new home for the employees of the lottery firm Goede Doelen Loterijen: a transparent, inspiring, and inviting building that is open to its surroundings and adds value to the neighbourhood.

It is located between a low-rise residential district and the high-rise buildings of Zuidas business district, forming a bridge between two worlds. A public plaza runs right into the building, where there is also a restaurant accessible to the public.

The roof, resting on six, sleek, tree-shaped columns, features 6,800 folded-open sheets of polished aluminium that prevent the building from heating up in the summer and create an extraordinary interplay of light and shade. Fitted with solar panels, this spectacular roof makes the building energy-positive while also serving as an icon in its surroundings.

Sustainability

The building was awarded the BREEAM Outstanding label, making it the most sustainable renovated building in the Netherlands. The structure of the existing building was retained, and elements that were demolished have since been reused. The new materials chosen are sustainable, removable, and reusable in the future. The staff were intensively involved in the design process from the very start.
