Alongside the 216 starter homes in Stepstone, Ceci is being built, a complex of 25 private sector apartments with a minimum size of 70 square metres. There will be commercial amenities on the ground floor. Ceci is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.
In the former Ronald McDonald House, close to Amsterdam UMC location VUmc, there will be permanent emergency accommodation with room for around 20 families starting from October 2024. The building is being renovated from April to September.
Kenniskwartier (Knowledge District) is developing fast. VU Campus is being regenerated, around 2,700 homes are set to be built and there are new amenities and green areas under development along with a thriving centre for research and education. All of this in what will soon be an amazingly accessible location.
In the weekend of 16 and 17 December 2023, we made modifications to the entrance to the emergency department of Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc. The entrance is now wider and easier to navigate, making it much safer, especially for cyclists and pedestrians.
In a few years’ time, 119 student flats are set to be developed in Kenniskwartier (Knowledge District). Housing association DUWO and the City of Amsterdam signed an agreement to that effect on 9 November 2023. Work is now in progress on the details of the design.
On 2 October 2023, the tender procedure for a housing construction project in the Kenniskwartier (Knowledge District) was launched. Next to the still to be constructed Jaddanbaikade canal and Florence Pricehof, there are plans for 25 private-sector homes, with space for hospitality/catering on the ground floor.
In the space of 18 months, The Pulse of Amsterdam has been transformed from a construction pit to an eyecatcher in the making. Alongside the A10, the two towers in this megaproject have shot out of the ground like mushrooms. Time for an update on construction progress.
The Stepstone residential tower, the largest social housing project in Zuidas so far, reached its highest point in May 2023. In early 2024, first-timers aged up to 28 will start moving into one of the 216 starter homes in the social sector. Construction is running according to schedule.
In February 2023, the maximum permitted speed in Gustav Mahlerlaan-West will be reduced from 50 km/h to 30 km/h. This will make this section of the Kenniskwartier between the Vrije Universiteit and Parnassusweg somewhat safer, before around 500 new homes are built there in the near future.
The exterior walls of Vrije Universiteit’s new Research Building are now windtight and watertight. The structure along the side of the building which protects cyclists and pedestrians from any falling building materials can now also be removed. Work will also begin on fitting out the laboratories inside the building.
The crossing over the road and tramlines in Parnassusweg has now been completed. This means that pedestrians heading from Amsterdam Zuid in the direction of VU Amsterdam can now avoid the busy junction between Buitenveldertselaan and De Boelelaan.
The Stepstone residential tower, with 216 first-timer apartments, is rapidly getting taller. It currently consists of two floors, but there will very soon be 22, with a total height of 80 m. All of that on a piece of land no bigger than 25 x 25 m.
