Who will win the 2023 Zuidas Sustainability Award?

Has your organisation set up or completed an inspiring sustainable initiative since March 2022? If so, register the project by 1 August 2023 and compete for the Zuidas Sustainability Award. An expert panel of judges will choose the winners in November.

A surprising waterside walk in Zuidas

Even in Zuidas, water management is a challenge. For example, the passenger tunnel at Amsterdam Zuid station has been flooded at times. But there are also some more pleasant surprises. They even include a mini-polder, at the heart of Zuidas. Want to know more? Take a stroll and do the Water Walk (‘Ommetje Water’), an audio tour (in Dutch).

More trees in a smarter Buitenveldertselaan

Between 1 and 11 May 2023, trees are being planted in Buitenveldertselaan. The street was recently resurfaced and 34 plane trees are being planted where two tram stops used to be. Only car traffic will be affected by (limited) disruption.

New birch, oak and Prunus trees for Amaliaplein

The week of 13 March 2023 saw the removal and addition of oak, birch and Prunus trees in Amaliaplein. The high groundwater level has caused the death of eight trees which we are now in the process of replacing. All of the new trees will be planted on Friday, 17 March.

Seventy drain covers to be replaced on Zuidplein

From 26 October until 30 November 2020, we are replacing 70 drain covers on Zuidplein. The reason: during heavy rainfall, the water does not drain properly.

Part of polder roof relocates from Zuidas to De Pijp

The green section of the world’s first-ever ‘polder roof’ is relocating Zuidas to De Pijp. Architects firm De Dakdokters (The Roof Doctors) came up with the idea of this extraordinary roof in 2013 and it has adorned Old School since then. Director Friso Klapwijk: ‘It’s good to see the plants being preserved.’

New-look Prinses Irenestraat takes shape

Good progress is being made on the new green landscaping in Prinses Irenestraat. Work on the introduction of the ‘water-retardant green strip’ is in full swing. New street paving will be laid starting on Saturday, 6 April, followed by some final work.

When completed in 2015, The Edge was the world’s most sustainable building. At that time, its main tenant (Deloitte) triumphed over its competitor (PWC) which had previously held that honour with its office in London. How sustainable is The Edge when subjected to today’s standards?
